Eligibility to Register to Vote in Virginia

  • U.S. citizen residents of Virginia
  • 18 years or older, or who will be 18 by the next general election,
  • Not been convicted of a felony or judged by a court as mentally incapacitated are eligible to register to vote. To have your rights restored, apply online or by email.

3 Ways to Register To Vote

You do not need to register in Virginia again if you are already registered at your current address. Check your registration online.

If your name or address has changed, you should update your registration to avoid delays when you vote. Registration is closed 10 days before general or primary elections.

If you miss the deadline to register, you might still be eligible to complete a Same Day Registration

1. Register to Vote Online

Complete the Voter Registration Application or update your existing voter registration online using the Virginia Department of Elections Citizen Portal. Please note, a Virginia DMV issued ID is needed to access the Citizen Portal. 

2. Register to Vote by Mail / Mail Box

Download the Voter Registration Application and mail completed application to our office at 2100 Clarendon Blvd., Suite 320, Arlington, VA 22201. 

Voter Registration Applications can also be dropped off in the elections mail slot located next to the Library Book Drop Off slot at the Bozman Government Center.

3. Register to Vote In Person

Voter Registration Applications are available in our office. 

No ID or Proof of Address is needed to register. Voters must provide their full social security number when registering.

Voter Registration Applications in Languages Other Than English

The U.S. Election Assistance Commission provides the National Mail Voter Registration Application on its website, in Spanish and a number of Asian languages, including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Tagalog, and Hindi.

Register for or Change Political Party Affiliation

Virginia is an Open Primary state which means that all registered voters in Virginia can vote in either the Democratic or Republican primary. You cannot register by party. When both parties are holding a Primary, you will be asked which primary you want to vote in when you check in.
